When Rebecca, owner of Hello Healing, contacted me late last year to ask whether we could collaborate in some way, I was excited. I had been following Rebecca’s inspiring journey to wellness on Instagram for some time and wanted to know more.
Rebecca was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) at age 13 and was bedbound, confined to a wheelchair when she was able to go out and missed a lot of school. Age 21 she was then finally diagnosed with Lyme Disease from Germany. After working alongside a nutritional therapist she finally began to see improvements and started to learn more in her own time and finally decided to go and study it part time with the College of Naturopathic Medicine in Manchester. Now she is fully qualified in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy and has her own busy clinic based in Lancashire. She specialises in CFS and Lyme disease because she can really empathise with her clients on their journey to recovery. I recently had a consultation on Skype with Rebecca and want to share my experience in the hope that she can also help some of you.
Prior to my consultation Rebecca requested I fill out a 7 day food diary and a health questionnaire.
For the first part of the consultation, Rebecca went through the health questionnaire in more detail with me. I told her my full history with Lyme Disease – when my symptoms started, how they progressed, and how I am now. It was really strange how similar our stories were. We agreed that we would concentrate on my most troublesome symptoms – chronic pain, fatigue and stomach problems.
Once Rebecca had gained a full picture of what was going on with my body we discussed what changes I could make to aid my recovery and she followed this up with a more detailed written action plan a day later. The plan didn’t just contain diet advice, but suggestions on lifestyle changes and supplements too.
Rebecca recommended I adopt more of a Paleolithic wholefood diet. I had already cut out gluten, dairy and refined sugar, but on looking at my 7 day food diary we realised that I was actually still eating quite a lot of high sugar fruits, dark chocolate and ‘healthy’ home-made cakes/biscuits containing natural sugars. Sugars, and grains (such as oats, pulses, rice etc) which are broken down into sugar/glucose in the body, are believed to feed lyme disease and also suppress the immune system. I was also not eating enough vegetables or protein. Rebecca advised me to up the protein and vegetables, lower my intake of natural sugars and grains and to continue eating lots of good fats (such as nuts, seeds, avocados and coconut oil). What was great was that Rebecca wasn’t telling me to cut anything out completely which is very tricky, she was just saying to have less of certain foods – so I can still have a little bit of 80-90% dark chocolate (but just not twice a day every day like I was doing), and have the odd spoonful of brown rice or quinoa (but just don’t have grains with every meal).
Rebecca also recommended I turn the Wifi off at night to limit electromagnetic stress which can weaken the immune system, and gave me a small list of supplements tailored to my body’s needs. She also offered me some advice on herbal treatment for lyme and further testing I could have done.
Rebecca is very warm and easy to talk to – as soon as I spoke to her I felt at ease and relaxed enough to talk freely about my illness. She is also professional and incredibly knowledgeable about lyme disease and how to treat it holistically. It was great to talk to someone who has been there and has come out the other side – someone who knows exactly what you’re going through and how tough it is. As soon as our Skype conversation ended, I felt happier and really hopeful about the future. It’s amazing how far she has come from being bed-bound and similar to me, to running her own company full-time, teaching nutrition courses and having a busy social life! She gave me some fantastic advice that hopefully will help me on my road to recovery! Thank you Rebecca!
